ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms of calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase 4 (CAMK4) and the therapeutic effect of amlodipine in essential hypertensive patients in Chinese Han nationality.
@*METHODS@#A total of 108 mild-to-moderate essential hypertension patients in Chinese Han nationality were treated with amlodipine for 8 weeks at a dosage of 5 mg/d. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was performed to detect the genotypes (rs10491334). Blood pressure was measured and analyzed.
@*RESULTS@#The result of rs10491334 polymorphism of CAMK4 was consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium distribution and the frequencies of C allele and T allele were 88.89% and 11.11%, respectively. The systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure before amlodipine treatment were not statistically different among different genotype carriers (P>0.05). The blood pressure was significantly reduced in all patients after amlodipine treatment (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased in patients with rs10491334 CC genotype and CT genotype compared with those patients with rs10491334 TT genotype. Total effective rates of CT and TT carriers were higher than those of the CC genotype carriers (P<0.01).
@*CONCLUSION@#The CAMK4 gene polymorphism might be associated with the efficacy of calcium channel blocker in treating mild-to-moderate essential hypertension patients.

ABSTRACT

A decade has passed since the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Tragedies such as that caused either by human or the Mother Nature result in damages not only to our physical health, but also our mental health. Although mental problems is generally not as tangible as physical ones, they do put a threat to our society especially in forms of long-term disorders such as post-traumatic stress symptoms [PTSD], depression and generalized anxiety disorder [GAD] and should not be ignored

ABSTRACT

Objective To describe symptom experiences and quality of life (QOL) in liver transplant recipients and explore the relationship between them,in order to provide a scientific basis and new directions for clinical assessment and intervention to improve QOL of them. Methods One hundred and thirty-seven liver transplant recipients who received liver transplantation from 1999 to 2008 were recruited in this study. They were investigated with The SF-36 Health Survey Questionnaire and Modified Transplant Symptom Occurrence and Symptom Distress Scale (MTSOSD). Results Liver transplant recipients experienced many symptoms (median 17,range 2-30). The most commen symptoms were:fatigue and drowsy, sleeplessness, mood swings, dizzy and headache, abdominal distension, and diarrhea, which distressed more than half of the recipients. Compared with a reference general population, the liver transplant recipients showed a significantly worse QOL score (P<0.01). The result of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the total score of symptom experiences, surviving time after transplantation operation, family income and social support score were significant predictors of QOL. Conclusion Liver transplant recipients suffer from complex symptom experiences after transplantation operation. Symptom management is imperative to be embraced in long-term care planning for liver transplant recipients and effective symptom intervention will result in improved QOL.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) for evaluating the health-related quality of life of patients with chronic soft tissue pain, (CSTP). Methods Two hundred and ten CSTP patients were rated with the SF-36 and the Medical Outcomes Study Pain Measurement (MOSPM) instrument and retested 2 weeks later. The internal consistency, test-retest relia-bility and parallel validity of the SF-36 were analyzed. Results The SF-36 showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Most repeated reliability internal correlation coefficients were between 0.44 and O. 66 (P≤0.01) except that of the SF sub-scale of the SF-36, which was O. 336 (P≤0.05). All the internal consistency Cronbach's a coefficients were >0.70. In the assessment of validity, there was significant correlation among all eight sub-scales of the SF-36, and between items 4-11 and total MOSPM scores. The correlation coefficients were between -0.145 and 0. 635 (P≤0.05 or P≤0.01), except between GH of the SF-36 and item 4 of the M OSPM (pain in-fluence on walking) and between MH and item 10 (pain influence days). Conclusion The Chinese version of the SF-36 has good reliability and validity in assessing the health related quality of life of CSTP patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the influence of dl-3n-butyphthalide on serum C-reactive protein(CRP)level in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Methods A total of 68 patients with acute cerebral infarction were chosen and divided into two groups randomly. Both the groups were treated with normal method and the treatment group was given dl-3n-butyphthalide 200 mg,tid.Serum CRP levels in the two groups were measured by immunoturbidimetry within 24 h after final diagnosis and at two weeks after treatment. Results Serum CRP levels all increased in the patients. After treatment for two weeks the level decreased obviously in treatment group. The difference was significant compared with control group. Conclusion The dl-3n-butyphthalide can markedly decrease the serum CRP level in acute cerebral infarction patients and has important significance for the pathogenetic condition change and prognosis of cerebral infarction.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the changes in serum leptin level in the elderly patients with chronic heart failure(CHF) and the relatonship between leptin and blood-pressure. Methods Serum leptin levels were studied in 35 male patients with CHF and 30 male normal controls. The relationship of serum leptin with blood pressure and LVEF were analyzed. Results Compared with controls, patients with CHF had higher serum leptin, syst olic blood pressure(SBP)and cliastolic blood pressure(DBP)(P
